IRS Denied a Request
Occasionally, the IRS denies a request for a client's tax records.
The IRS will deny a request if it contains incorrect information. For taxpayer security reasons, the IRS does not tell us why it denies a request. When this happens, your client needs to consent with corrected information so a new request can be submitted to the IRS.
Possible Errors
Something about the information provided does not match the IRS records. These include:
- Tax ID number is incorrect. This would be an SSN for an individual or an EIN for a business.
- Name discrepancy: If a name change has been filed, it may not be processed yet.
- Address discrepancy: The address should match the taxpayer's last processed tax return. This generally doesn't include any extensions they filed, unless the extension came with an address change form. For a business this may or may not be the physical address of the business.
- Job title discrepancy: This only applies to business taxpayers. The job title must match what the IRS has on file.
What Should I Do?
Resend your client the consent link.
Getting consent without pre-verifying clients is the most reliable way to collect accurate information and protect your clients' data.
If you pre-verified this client when you first collected consent, remove them from your system before sending the consent link.
