What is a household?
A household is defined by IRS filings
A household may include up to two married people who file jointly.
It can also include people they claim as dependents, and any businesses, trusts, and estates for which they have signing authority. These relationships come from the annual tax return and the associations found in their IRS records.
What if a married couple files separately?
TaxStatus follows the same definitions as the federal government in defining a household. If a couple files separately, even if they are married, then they count as two separate households within the TaxStatus system. Any businesses, trusts, or estates follow the person with signing authority over those entities.
